The Michigan State Board of Education publication, “Better Education for Michigan Citizens:  A Blueprint for Action”, recommends that all high school graduates complete:

4 years of communication skills, including reading, grammar, literature, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking

2 years of mathematics, including at least one course covering  algebraic concepts

2 years of science, including both biological and physical science

3 years of social science, including government, history, economics, cultural and ethnic studies, geography, law related studies and critical thinking

2 years or more in one or a combination of the following areas:
foreign language, fine or performing arts, vocational or practical arts

1 year of health and/or physical education

1/2 year of  “hands-on” computer education

Students who plan to go to a four-year college or university should be encouraged to study the following:

1 additional year of mathematics, making a total three years--including  biology, geometry, advanced algebra and trigonometry

1 additional year of science, making a total of three years--including  biology, chemistry and physics

At least 2 years of a foreign language
